5th Annual TACCSTER Symposium Huge Success

Texas researchers who use advanced computing to advance research goals showcase work at leading symposium

Niall Gaffney, TACC's Director of Data Intensive Computing, gives a tour of the data center during the TACCSTER Symposium.

In September, TACC opened its doors to nearly 100 students, faculty, and staff scientists from across Texas for the 5th annual TACC Symposium for Texas Researchers (TACCSTER). The event included invited talks, lightning talks, tutorials, a poster session, one-on-ones with TACC staff, data center tours, and a Town Hall-style meeting with TACC leadership.

"We were all really excited to host this event on site and in person again," said Joe Allen, a research associate at TACC who helped organize the symposium. "The talks and the posters this year were excellent. The attendees were clearly engaged and eager to interact with each other and with TACC staff."

The Keynote Speaker, Peter Fox of UT’s Health Science Center at San Antonio, gave an update on his decades-long BrainMap project, which seeks to share data and software tools to enable meta-analysis of the human brain. Other speakers gave talks on topics ranging from continuous integration and continuous deployment in research computing to exploring early galaxies with data from the recently-launched James Webb Space Telescope.

Of the 41 posters from 11 different institutions presented at the symposium, two standout graduate students were recognized with a Best Poster award. Md Ahmed Al Muzaddid (UT Arlington) was recognized for his work on "Automated Detection and Tracking of Infield Cotton Bolls"; and Mishal Raza (University of North Texas) was recognized for her work on "Molding Aortic Valve Hemodynamics Using a Novel Immersed Boundary Method."
